CASA Monitor — Instructor's Guide



Section 1: Introduction

CASA Monitor can be used to proctor online exams.

While the student is testing, two "videos" (12 frames / second) are sent to an archive.
One video is from the student's webcam.
The other is from the student's computer screen.

You can review these videos after the student finishes the exam.
There is also a way to scan many students' videos en-masse and search for abnormalities, such as a covered webcam.
See Section 5 below.

There are two versions of CASA Monitor.

One version is embedded in CASA/CourseWare.
If your exam is in CASA/CourseWare, you should use this version.
See Section 2 below.

The other version is stand-alone.
If your exam is outside of CASA/CourseWare (eg, a PDF or Blackboard) you should use this version.
See Section 3 below.


Section 2: The CASA/CourseWare Version of CASA Monitor (usually called the "integrated" version)

Use this version of CASA Monitor if your exam is in CASA/CourseWare.
Here is the procedure.
  1. If your course (section) is not already in CASA/CourseWare, make a request

    Menu item A.40.
  2. Wait until your request has been processed and your students can log in.
  3. Make an exam request.
    If your request is for only one section, please use https://www.estudy.uh.edu/CASAMonitorLogin/Home/InstructorLogin menu item A.50.
    If your request is for multiple sections, send email directly to mcnguyen4@uh.edu
  4. Wait until your exam has been set up.
  5. Give your students a link to the Student Guide.

  6. Send your students to CASA/CourseWare to schedule a time-slot for taking the exam. They will schedule under the "Schedule Exams" tab.
  7. Send your students a link to the help video. See Section 4 below.
  8. When the scheduled time arrives, student can take the exam under the "Monitor" exam tab.

Section 3: The Stand-alone Version of CASA Monitor (usually called the "stand-alone" version)

Use this version of CASA Monitor if your exam is outside of CASA/CourseWare
(e.g. a PDF exam, or an exam in Blackboard).
Here is the procedure:
  1. If your course (section) is not already in CASA/CourseWare, make a request on the course request page: Even though your exam is not in CASA/CourseWare, your students must still schedule there.

  2. Wait until your request has been processed and your students can log in.
  3. Make an exam request.
    If your request is for only one section, please use https://www.estudy.uh.edu/CASAMonitorLogin/Home/InstructorLogin menu item A.50.

  4. Wait until your exam has been set up.
  5. Give your students a link to the Student Guide.

  7. Send a link to the help video to your students. See Section 4 below.
  8. When the scheduled time arrives, your students can log in at

Section 4: Student Help Video

The student login requires the use of either the Chrome browser or the Edge browser.

Section 5: Viewing the Video Archives

As mentioned in Section 1, the two videos from each student's session are archived.
There is a webpage for instructors to view the video.
Using that webpage, you can view the videos, perform an automatic search for abnormalities such as a covered webcam, etc.

Section 6: Maintenance Window

Every Sunday 4am to 7am is reserved as a maintenance window. CASA Monitor may not be available during these windows.
